It’s JUNK DRAWER time! If you have more than one junk drawer, then choose the one you use the most and resolve to get that sorted today!
For me, the kitchen junk drawer is the bane of my life – batteries, pens, tape measures, lunch box notes, safety pins – it seems to be the catch-all place for items that we need but don’t know exactly where to put! It’s also another space in the home that gets untidy again so quickly that we feel uninspired to tackle it!
So let’s get started:
Step 1 – (you’re getting the hang of it now) is to SUBTRACT. Take everything out of the drawer while sorting into three piles – KEEP, REHOME and DONATE.
Step 2 – look at your KEEP items and sort “like with like” – batteries together, stationery items, lunchbox etc.
Step 3 – find tupperware items or smaller boxes that can become a permanent home for each category you have created above. That way, everyone knows exactly where items belong, you can find things easily, and you can see at a glance when you are running low.
Step 4 – rehome items to where they should be. Again, don’t get hung up on cleaning up THOSE spaces, stay focussed on your junk drawer. Make a list of items that need to be ADDED to this drawer – for example, I needed to stock up on batteries and buy new pens/ pencils for this drawer so that we always have some nearby.
Here are a few of my inspiration pics on how to organise these drawers:
1) Using tupperware to organise by category:
2) Buying matching cardboard boxes – beautiful:
3) Collect all your empty cereal boxes, cell phone boxes etc and cover them in wrapping paper:
4) I do love the use of labels:
Inexpensive solutions with massive results! Enjoy!
