Ah SHOES. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…
This is one of my more trickier challenges, because I love the IDEA of shoes! I like how they fit, regardless of how many chocolate brownies I have eaten the day before; I love how they can completely transform an outfit; and I love shopping for them. That being said, I relentlessly stick to my “old favourites” and leave the majority of shoes lying at the back of the cupboard unworn. It makes no sense!
Over the years, I have also tried a number of various storage methods – my favourite being a shoe box for each pair, with a photo of the shoes neatly stuck to the front. Don’t get me wrong, it LOOKED amazing, but I was far too lazy to sift through boxes of shoes to find the ones I was looking for, and often forgot I had them. It might have worked better if I had the space to arrange my shoes boxes at eye level (like the image below) – but my present cupboard setup just doesn’t have the space!
The only option (sadly) was to donate a huge pile of shoes that I just wasn’t wearing more than once or twice a year, and find a better solution to store the ones I did wear. The remaining shoes have been organised by season (at present, my winter shoes are within easy reach) – and I feel far happier knowing that I have reduced them by just over 30%.
Some shoe storage inspiration pics for you today:
1) I quite like this DIY pallet crate option – it could work along the floor of my cupboard:
2) Another DIY option – under-the-bed- storage on wheels:
3) I’m not sure if anything like this is available in South Africa – it’s so clever!
4) Cute idea for flip-flops – use magazine holders:
At the very least, subtracting shoes that are not earning their keep will make the whole area a lot neater. Good luck!
